OK so these are a bit on the expensive side, but all these manufacturers make good reliable bikes at lower prices as well. It is the research into these top of the range bikes that trickles down to the cheaper models, benefitting us all.

Trek Madone 5.9 SSLX bike

Price: approx £6,500

More or less the same bike that carried Lance Armstrong to victory, it is fine-tuned for weight, aerodynamics and, of course, has top of the range equipment.

Bianchi FG Lite bike

Price: approx £3,600

FG comes from Felice Gimondi, one of the great Bianchi champions, and the bike well deserves the title. Strong, light and a great all-rounder. As you would hope if you are paying so much.

Giant TCR Advanced bike

Price: approx £4,500

Reputedly made of the strongest, lightest (most expensive) composite material in the world, with special permission from the US Ministry of Defence, makes for a very light, stiff bike.
